The Germans, a fraction of what they are today, were

Looking back at one night in Yokohama

There were few chances created until Oliver Kahn bizarrely named the top before the final gifted Brazil Ronaldo a sitter after spilling midway through the second half.

“Of course it bitter when you make a mistake in the final, I think it was the only mistake in the tournament it 10 times as bitter,” Kahn told the Associated Press in the aftermath. “There no consolation.”

Ronaldo, the World Cup all time leading scorer along with Germany Miroslav Klose, put the match to bed a little over 10 minutes later when he collected in the semi circle before poor marking allowed the poacher to ping in a goal off the post.

Historically speaking, the match was a bit of a dud. The Germans, a fraction of what they are today, were without their top player, Michael Ballack.

And head coach Rudi Voller tossed future holding midfielder Torsten Frings out on a wing.

Klose, back for a fourth edition, and Oliver Neuville created very little in terms of chances in front of the goal.

Looking back, many say the only reason the Germans even progressed was due to their soft path.

While they attempted to produce a more romantic brand of soccer, the Brazilians were also a bit more direct back then, electing ping balls forward to Ronaldo instead of connecting passes out of the back.

Brazilian legends like Roberto Carlos and Cafu were the wide players that day for Luiz Felipe Scolari, with Ronaldinho attempting to pull strings beneath Rivaldo and Ronaldo.

Wearing the No. 11 shirt, Ronaldinho hadn yet moved to Barcelona and was a fraction of the player he become.

He wasn yet playing at the pace that would see him dubbed the world best player a few years later.

Just 12 years on and the game has changed so much. Compared to what we witnessed at the 2014 World Cup, the tournament 12 years ago was played in slow motion.

## ## “The game has changed everywhere and that something we got to get to grips with.”

Most notable a decade on is the emphasis put on wing play. Wide players like Brazil Marcelo and Maicon, along with Germany Philipp Lahm, would abuse players from the 2002 edition.
